The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
